Sanatorium

A sanatorium has different meanings depending on the region of residence. Historically for Americans, Australians and most European countries it is a medical facility for long-term illness, most typically associated with treatment of tuberculosis before antibiotics. A distinction is sometimes made between "sanitarium" and "sanatorium" . The term "sanatorium" was often used throughout the 20th century in the US as a socially-acceptable term for psychiatric hospitals.
