MONOGYNY

Monogyny

Monogyny is a mating system in which a male can only mate with one female throughout his lifetime but the female may mate with more than one male.In this system the males provide no paternal care. Many spider species that are monogynous, the males have two copulatory organs, which only allows them to only mate a maximum twice throughout their lifetime. During copulation monogynous males have adapted to cause self genital damage or even death to increase their chances of paternity. Monogyny lowers a male’s fitness because they only sire the offspring from the one mateing, unlike other systems which allow males to mate many times producing more successors.
