In organic chemistry, a thiol is an organosulfur compound that contains a carbon-bonded sulfhydryl group . Thiols are the sulfur analogue of alcohols, and the word is a portmanteau of "thion" + "alcohol", with the first word deriving from Greek θεῖον = "sulfur".
