CAPOFMAINTENANCE

Cap of Maintenance

A Cap of Maintenance is a ceremonial cap of crimson velvet lined with ermine, which is worn or carried by certain persons as a sign of nobility or special honour. It is worn with the high part to the fore, the tapering tail behind. It is often depicted in British heraldry, when it sits atop the usual helm and is blazoned A chapeau gules turned up ermine, and frequently has the family's usual crest on top of it.
